What’s Actually in Your Soap?

Most of us have flipped over a bottle of soap, read three lines of ingredients, and thought:
I have no idea what any of this means.
At The Refillery, we believe you deserve to understand what you’re bringing into your home and putting on your body — without needing a chemistry degree or a fear-based Google spiral.

First: What Soap Is Actually Made Of
Most liquid soaps and cleaners contain a few core components. When you strip away the long names, they’re usually doing one of these jobs:
1. Surfactants (The Cleaners)
These are the ingredients that lift dirt and oil so they can rinse away with water.
Common examples you might see:
Decyl Glucoside
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Alpha Olefin Sulfonate
Plain English? They help water grab onto grease so you can wash it down the drain.
Not all surfactants are created equal. Some are harsher. Some are plant-derived. Some are gentler for sensitive skin. When we source products, we look for effective cleaners that balance performance with skin and environmental consideration.
Because “clean” still has to mean clean.
2. Preservatives (The Safety Net)
If a product contains water, it needs protection from bacteria and mold growth. That’s not scary — that’s basic safety.
You’ll often see:
Sodium Benzoate
Potassium Sorbate
These help keep products shelf-stable and safe to use.
Preservatives aren’t the enemy. Unsafe formulas are. We choose products that use well-studied, widely accepted preservative systems in appropriate concentrations.
3. pH Adjusters (The Balancers)
Ingredients like citric acid help maintain a stable pH so products are effective but not irritating.
Simple. Functional. Necessary.
What Does “Phthalate-Free” Actually Mean?
You’ve probably seen this phrase on labels. Let’s demystify it.
Phthalates are chemicals sometimes used to make plastics flexible or to help fragrances last longer. The issue isn’t that every product containing them is instantly harmful — it’s that some phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption with long-term exposure.
When a product is labeled phthalate-free, it means those specific compounds aren’t being used in the fragrance or formula.
At The Refillery, we prioritize phthalate-free products because:
We serve families.
We care a whole hell of a lot about hormone health. (ayyyyy, ladiessss)
Many of us (myself included) have navigated sensitive skin and baby-safe living.
Clean Doesn’t Have to Mean Boring
Let’s clear something else up.
Non-toxic does not mean:
Unscented everything
No lather
No performance
No joy

You can have beautifully scented products using essential oils or thoughtfully formulated fragrance blends that are transparent and phthalate-free.
Clean can smell amazing. Clean can feel luxurious. Clean can work really, really well.
But here’s why we are deeply committed to maintaining a strong lineup of unscented products:
Because not everyone can tolerate fragrance.
Sensitive skin. Babies. Hormone sensitivities. Migraines. Eczema. Pregnancy. Postpartum. Cancer. Disease.
Offering unscented options isn’t boring. It’s inclusive.
And we will always protect that space on our shelves.
How We Vet Products So You Don’t Have To
Here’s what you won’t find at The Refillery:
Fear-based marketing. Greenwashing buzzwords. Products I haven’t researched or personally put to the test myself, honey.
Before anything lands on our refill wall, we look at:
Full ingredient transparency
Phthalate-free fragrance standards
Reasonable preservative systems
Effectiveness (because literally no one wants eco-friendly soap that doesn’t work!!!!!)
Supplier values and manufacturing practices
Price accessibility
We ask hard questions so you don’t have to stand in an aisle Googling every ingredient.
Our goal is simple: You should feel confident filling your bottle without wondering what’s hiding inside.
Ingredient Transparency > Ingredient Anxiety
You don’t need to be perfect. We are all here choosing gentle practice at the Refillery. Let this work for you so it is easily maintained. You don’t need to throw everything out overnight. Please do not.
At The Refillery, we believe sustainable living in good ole Salina, Kansas (and beyond) should feel empowering — not overwhelming.
We’re here to offer:
Products you can pronounce (or at least understand)
Unscented options for sensitive households
Thoughtfully formulated scents for those who want them
A refill model that reduces plastic without increasing stress

Because at the end of the day, it’s just soap, baby.
But it’s also your home. Your kids. Your skin. Your everyday choices.
And those deserve intention.
If you ever have a question about what’s in something on our shelves — ask. We love talking ingredients. We just promise to do it without the drama. 🌱
